Quinton T. QT East died 1/24/2008

Quinton T. East of 734 Emory Valley Rd. Oak Ridge, TN 37830-7016  Died January 24, 2008.  A life-time member of ACF.   His son Thomas Craig East of Lexington donated his checker library to Alan Millhone, President of ACF to be given away to young people interested in a hobby in checkers.  I talked to Craig and he said, "I know this would have made him proud."  "Dad was full of life unto October of 2007 when he fell in the bathroom."  "His recovery just took everything out of him and he died in a nursing home on Jan 27 of this year."  QT East held an 1894 ACF Rating in 2005. QT East's wife, Gladys died in 2001.  Here are some old newspaper articles that mention QT playing checkers.  Quinton in his active years '60 -'80's, was a regular contestant at Southeastern - District 4, Southern States, and the North Carolina Opens.  He was a NCCA Life-Time member.

Quinton T. East

Quinton T. East, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Briarcliff Health Care.

Mr. East was born May 17, 1917 in Alexander City, Ala. to the late Talmadge and Grace Day East. Quinton was a retired machinist with Union Carbide and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and the Optimist Club.

Mr. East is preceded in death by his brothers: Carlton, Floyd, Van, Edward; and sisters: Gerty and Vivian.

He is survived by two sons, Craig East of Lexington, Ky., and Tony East of Oak Ridge; daughter, Quinelle East of Knoxville; brother, Rayford East; sisters, Mildred, Fanny Bell, Dialum, Lorez, and Aguilla; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, 1 p.m. in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Mahan Archer officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Online messages to the family may be left at www.martinoakridgefuneralhome.com.

Gladys Cotton East

Gladys Cotton East, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. East was born July 17, 1923, in Daviston, Ala. She was the daughter of Thomas and Annie Lou Cotton, who are deceased.

She is survived by her husband, Quinton T. East; her sons, Tony D. East of Oak Ridge and Thomas Craig East of Lexington, Ky.; her daughter, Anice Quinelle East of Knoxville; her sister, Demerle Ousley of Lanett, Ala.; her brother, Edsel Cotton of Alexander City, Ala.; two grandchildren, Carol Lerner of Dearborn, Mich., and Julie Ostrye of Pensacola, Fla.; and by five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two other brothers, Roy Cotton and James Cotton, and a granddaughter, Susan Stone of Knoxville.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight, March 20, at the funeral home.
